Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June in many countries including the USA and the UK, but on other days in other parts of the world. On Father's Day we give greetings cards and gifts to our fathers, and celebrate with special family dinners.
History of Father's Day
Father's Day was created in the early 20th Century as a complement to Mother's Day. It was organzied by Mrs. Grace Clayton to celebrate the lives of the 210 fathers who had died in the mining disaster in Monongah, West Virginia on Decemeber 6th, 1907.
After several failed attempts to officially recognize Father's Day, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers in 1966. He designated the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. Six years later, in 1972, President Richard Nixon made Father's Day a permanent national holiday.
