Adding USB 3.0 ports to an existing laptop or desktop computer is a fairly easy and straightforward process that should take most users only a few minutes to complete. Upgrading a computer to use USB 3.0 is simply a matter of opening the case, inserting a card, and installing a few drivers from an included CD. Anyone can do it, so here are the basics of how to upgrade to USB 3.0.

Upgrading A Laptop Computer To USB 3.0

First it should be noted that not all laptops will be able to make use of USB 3.0 upgrades. In order to do so a laptop must have what is known as an ExpressCard slot. This slot, usually found on the left or right side of the laptop, is about the size of four credit cards stacked on top of each other. Netbook and other ultra-portable laptop computers often do not have such slots and so will not be able to upgrade easily to USB 3.0.
